Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction Program
The Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction Program is a U.S. initiative established in 1991 to reduce the threat of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. It aims to secure and dismantle weapons of mass destruction, enhance safety and security measures, and prevent proliferation.
The program is named after U.S. Senators Sam Nunn and Richard Lugar, who were instrumental in its creation. It has facilitated cooperation between the U.S. and former Soviet states, providing funding and technical assistance to help eliminate dangerous materials and improve global security.
