Nullification Crisis
The Nullification Crisis was a political conflict in the early 1830s between the federal government and the state of South Carolina. It arose when South Carolina declared that it could nullify, or invalidate, federal tariffs that it deemed unconstitutional. This was a response to the Tariff of 1828, which the state believed unfairly favored northern industries over southern agriculture.
President Andrew Jackson opposed this idea of nullification, asserting that the federal government had the ultimate authority. The crisis escalated when Jackson threatened to use military force against South Carolina, leading to a compromise that gradually reduced the tariffs and eased tensions between the state and the federal government.
