North Slope Borough
The North Slope Borough is a region located in the northernmost part of Alaska, covering over 88,000 square miles. It is known for its vast landscapes, including the Arctic tundra and the Chukchi Sea. The borough is home to several communities, with Utqiaġvik (formerly known as Barrow) being the largest city and the northernmost city in the United States.
Established in 1972, the North Slope Borough is unique in its governance, as it is one of the few boroughs in Alaska that operates under a home rule charter. The local economy is primarily driven by oil production, subsistence hunting, and fishing, reflecting the region's rich natural resources and cultural heritage.
