Norse Poetry
Norse poetry, originating from the Norse culture of Scandinavia, is characterized by its use of alliteration and a specific meter known as fornyrðislag. This form of poetry often features themes of heroism, mythology, and the natural world, reflecting the values and beliefs of the Vikings.
The two main types of Norse poetry are Eddaic and Skaldic. Eddaic poetry, found in texts like the Poetic Edda, consists of simple stanzas and focuses on mythological tales. In contrast, Skaldic poetry is more complex, often composed by court poets called skalds, and includes intricate wordplay and personal themes.
