Nona Gaprindashvili is a Georgian chess player, born on March 3, 1941, in Zugdidi, Georgia. She became the first woman to earn the title of Grandmaster from the World Chess Federation (FIDE) in 1978, a significant achievement in a male-dominated sport. Gaprindashvili was a dominant force in women's chess, winning the Women's World Chess Championship five times between 1962 and 1978.
