Nivelle Offensive
The Nivelle Offensive was a military campaign during World War I, launched by the French Army in April 1917. Named after General Robert Nivelle, the offensive aimed to break through German lines along the Aisne River and achieve a decisive victory. The plan involved a massive artillery bombardment followed by infantry assaults, but it faced significant challenges, including poor weather and strong German defenses.
The offensive resulted in heavy casualties for the French forces, with little territorial gain. Discontent among soldiers grew, leading to mutinies in the French Army. Ultimately, the Nivelle Offensive is often seen as a failure, contributing to changes in military strategy for the remainder of the war.
