Nitriles
Nitriles are organic compounds that contain a cyano group, which is a carbon atom triple-bonded to a nitrogen atom (–C≡N). They are often derived from carboxylic acids and can be found in various forms, including aliphatic and aromatic nitriles. Nitriles are used in the production of plastics, synthetic fibers, and pharmaceuticals.
In addition to their industrial applications, nitriles can also be found in nature. Some plants produce nitriles as part of their defense mechanisms against herbivores. The presence of nitriles in certain foods, such as cassava, can be toxic if not properly processed, highlighting the importance of understanding their properties and effects.
