Nile Basin Initiative
The Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) is a regional partnership established in 1999 to promote sustainable management and development of the Nile River Basin. It involves 10 countries: Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. The initiative aims to enhance cooperation among these nations to address shared challenges related to water resources, agriculture, and environmental sustainability.
The NBI focuses on collaborative projects that benefit all member states, ensuring equitable access to the Nile's resources. It also seeks to foster dialogue and build trust among countries, helping to mitigate conflicts over water usage. By promoting integrated water resource management, the NBI aims to support economic development and improve the livelihoods of millions of people in the region.
