Ngāti Mutunga
Ngāti Mutunga is a Māori iwi (tribe) based in New Zealand, primarily located in the Taranaki region. They are descendants of the original inhabitants of the area and have a rich cultural heritage that includes traditional practices, language, and customs. The iwi has a strong connection to their ancestral lands and waterways, which are significant to their identity and history.
Historically, Ngāti Mutunga played a vital role in the Māori migration to New Zealand, arriving on the waka (canoe) called Māhuhu-ki-te-rangi. The iwi has faced various challenges over the years, including land loss and the impacts of colonization. Today, Ngāti Mutunga actively works to preserve their culture and promote the well-being of their community through education and economic development initiatives.
