New Zealand Fur Seals
New Zealand Fur Seals are marine mammals native to the coasts of New Zealand. They are known for their thick fur, which helps insulate them in cold waters. Adult males can weigh up to 200 kilograms, while females are smaller, averaging around 50 kilograms. These seals are agile swimmers, often diving to depths of 200 meters in search of fish and squid.
These seals are social animals, often found in large colonies on rocky shores and beaches. They breed during the summer months, with females giving birth to a single pup after a gestation period of about 11 months. Conservation efforts have helped their populations recover from past declines.
