Neural Signals
Neural signals are electrical impulses that travel along neurons, the specialized cells in the nervous system. These signals are essential for communication within the brain and between the brain and the rest of the body. When a neuron is activated, it generates an action potential, which is a rapid change in electrical charge that propagates along its axon.
Once the action potential reaches the end of the axon, it triggers the release of neurotransmitters into the synapse, the gap between neurons. These neurotransmitters bind to receptors on the next neuron, allowing the signal to continue. This process is fundamental for functions such as movement, sensation, and cognition, involving structures like the brain and spinal cord.
