Neumatic Notation
Neumatic notation is an early form of musical notation used primarily in the Middle Ages. It consists of symbols called neumes that indicate the pitch and rhythm of music, particularly in Gregorian chant. Neumes are placed above the text of the chant, guiding singers on how to perform the melody.
This system does not specify exact pitches or durations but provides a general outline of the melodic contour. Over time, neumatic notation evolved into more precise forms, leading to the development of staff notation, which is widely used in modern music today.
