Nestinarstvo is a traditional Bulgarian ritual that combines elements of fire-walking and dance. It is performed during the feast of St. Constantine and St. Helena in the village of Balgari, where participants, known as nestinari, dance on hot embers to invoke spiritual protection and healing. This practice is deeply rooted in local folklore and is believed to connect the dancers with the divine.
The ritual is often accompanied by live music, typically played on traditional instruments like the gaida (bagpipe) and tupan (drum). Nestinarstvo has been recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, highlighting its significance in preserving cultural identity and community bonds.
