Neotenic
Neoteny is a biological phenomenon where an organism retains juvenile traits into adulthood. This can include physical characteristics, behaviors, or reproductive features that are typically associated with younger stages of development. Neotenic species often exhibit traits that make them appear more appealing or less threatening, which can influence their survival and reproduction.
A well-known example of neoteny is found in axolotls, a type of salamander that remains aquatic and gilled throughout its life. In contrast to other salamanders that undergo metamorphosis, axolotls retain their larval features, allowing them to thrive in their specific environments while still being capable of reproduction.
