Native American Governance
Native American governance refers to the systems and structures used by Indigenous tribes and nations to manage their communities and affairs. Each tribe has its own unique governance model, often based on traditional practices, cultural values, and historical treaties. Many tribes operate under a constitution or set of bylaws that outline the roles of leaders, decision-making processes, and the rights of members.
Tribal governments can include elected officials, councils, and various committees that address issues such as law enforcement, education, and economic development. Some tribes also engage in intergovernmental relations with federal and state governments, recognizing their sovereignty and rights as defined by treaties and laws, such as the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act.
