National Sorry Day
National Sorry Day is observed in Australia on May 26 each year. It is a day dedicated to acknowledging and apologizing for the historical mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, particularly the forced removal of Indigenous children from their families, known as the Stolen Generations. The day encourages reflection on the impact of these policies and promotes healing and reconciliation.
Established in 1998, National Sorry Day coincides with the anniversary of the Bringing Them Home report, which documented the experiences of the Stolen Generations. The day is marked by various events, including community gatherings, educational activities, and ceremonies, aimed at fostering understanding and respect between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
