National Institutes of Technology
The National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are a group of autonomous public engineering institutes in India. They were established to promote higher education in engineering and technology. NITs offer undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in various fields of engineering, science, and management. They are known for their rigorous academic standards and competitive admission process, primarily through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).
There are currently 31 NITs across India, each functioning as an independent institution linked to a common council. The NITs aim to foster research and innovation, contributing to the development of skilled professionals in the engineering and technology sectors.
