Nat Turner was an enslaved African American who led a significant rebellion in Virginia in 1831. Born in 1800, he was deeply religious and believed he was chosen by God to lead his people to freedom. His revolt resulted in the deaths of around 60 white individuals and was one of the largest slave uprisings in U.S. history.
The rebellion was ultimately suppressed by local militias and resulted in harsh reprisals against enslaved people. In the aftermath, many states enacted stricter slave laws, and Nat Turner was captured, tried, and executed. His actions sparked discussions about slavery and resistance in America.
