Myanmar Politics
Myanmar's politics have been marked by a long history of military rule and civil conflict. After gaining independence from British colonial rule in 1948, the country experienced a series of military coups, with the most recent occurring in February 2021. This coup ousted the democratically elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi and the National League for Democracy (NLD), leading to widespread protests and a violent crackdown by the military, known as the Tatmadaw.
The political landscape in Myanmar is complex, involving various ethnic groups and armed organizations seeking autonomy and rights. The ongoing conflict has resulted in a humanitarian crisis, with many people displaced and in need of assistance. International responses have included sanctions against the military and calls for a return to democracy, but the situation remains unstable and challenging for the people of Myanmar.
