Moxidectin
Moxidectin is a medication primarily used to treat parasitic infections, particularly those caused by certain types of worms and insects. It belongs to a class of drugs known as macrocyclic lactones, which work by disrupting the nervous system of parasites, leading to their paralysis and death. Moxidectin is often used in veterinary medicine but has also been approved for human use in specific cases, such as treating river blindness caused by the parasite Onchocerca volvulus.
In humans, Moxidectin is administered as a single oral dose and is considered effective and safe for treating certain parasitic diseases. Its use has been endorsed by health organizations, including the World Health Organization, as part of efforts to control and eliminate neglected tropical diseases. Ongoing research continues to explore its potential applications in other parasitic infections.
