Mount Nyos
Mount Nyos is a volcanic crater lake located in Cameroon, known for its unique geological features. The lake sits in a volcanic crater and is filled with water that has absorbed carbon dioxide from the surrounding rocks. This makes it a fascinating site for scientists studying volcanic activity and gas emissions.
In 1986, Mount Nyos experienced a catastrophic event when a sudden release of carbon dioxide from the lake caused a deadly gas cloud. This incident resulted in the deaths of nearly 1,800 people and thousands of livestock in nearby villages. The tragedy highlighted the dangers of volcanic lakes and the importance of monitoring such natural phenomena.
