Lake Nyos
Lake Nyos is a crater lake located in the Northwest Region of Cameroon. It is known for its deep waters and unique geological features, formed in a volcanic crater. The lake is rich in carbon dioxide, which can accumulate in large quantities at the bottom.
In 1986, a tragic event occurred when a sudden release of carbon dioxide from the lake caused a deadly gas cloud, resulting in the deaths of nearly 1,800 people in nearby villages. This incident highlighted the potential dangers of lakes like Lake Nyos and led to ongoing monitoring and safety measures to prevent future occurrences.
