The Mosuo are an ethnic group living near Lugu Lake in southwestern China. They are known for their unique matriarchal society, where women hold primary authority in family and social structures. In Mosuo culture, lineage is traced through the female line, and property is often passed down from mothers to daughters. One of the most distinctive aspects of Mosuo life is their practice of walking marriages, where women choose their partners but do not live with them. Instead, men visit women at night and return to their own homes in the morning, allowing women to maintain independence while raising children within their maternal families.
