Montaukett
The Montaukett are a Native American tribe originally from the eastern end of Long Island, New York. They are part of the larger Algonquian language family and historically inhabited the area around Montauk Point. The tribe engaged in fishing, hunting, and agriculture, relying on the rich natural resources of their coastal environment.
In the 17th century, the Montaukett faced significant challenges due to European colonization, which led to land loss and population decline. Today, efforts are being made to preserve their heritage and culture, with some descendants actively working to gain recognition and support for their community and traditions.
