Molten Salt
Molten salt refers to a type of salt that has been heated to a temperature where it becomes liquid. This state is typically achieved at high temperatures, often above 200 degrees Celsius (392 degrees Fahrenheit). Molten salt is used in various applications, including thermal energy storage and in some types of nuclear reactors, where it can efficiently transfer heat.
One of the most common mixtures used for molten salt applications is a blend of sodium nitrate and potassium nitrate. These salts are favored for their ability to remain liquid at high temperatures and their thermal stability. This makes them ideal for storing and transferring heat in solar power plants, enhancing energy efficiency.
