Modal (Music)
In music, a modal system refers to a scale or set of notes that create a specific mood or character. Unlike the major and minor scales commonly used in Western music, modes are derived from the diatonic scale and include seven distinct types, such as Ionian, Dorian, and Mixolydian. Each mode has its own unique interval structure, which influences the overall sound and emotional quality of a piece.
Modal music has been used in various genres, including jazz, folk, and classical traditions. Composers and musicians often explore modes to evoke different feelings or to create a sense of movement within their compositions. This approach allows for greater creativity and expression in musical storytelling.
