Mitochondrial Inheritance
Mitochondrial inheritance refers to the transmission of genetic material found in mitochondria, the energy-producing structures within cells. Unlike most of our DNA, which comes from both parents, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is inherited exclusively from the mother. This means that traits linked to mtDNA are passed down through maternal lines.
Mitochondrial DNA contains genes essential for energy production and cellular function. Mutations in mtDNA can lead to various mitochondrial disorders, affecting energy metabolism in cells. These conditions can impact multiple systems in the body, particularly those with high energy demands, such as the muscles and nervous system.
