Mitochondrial Disorders
Mitochondrial disorders are a group of genetic conditions that affect the mitochondria, the energy-producing structures in cells. These disorders can disrupt the body's ability to generate energy, leading to a variety of symptoms, including muscle weakness, neurological issues, and organ dysfunction. The severity and type of symptoms can vary widely among individuals.
These disorders can be inherited from either parent or occur spontaneously due to mutations in mitochondrial DNA or nuclear DNA. Common examples include Leigh syndrome and Mitochondrial myopathy. Diagnosis often involves genetic testing, and treatment focuses on managing symptoms and improving quality of life.
