Mildred Loving
Mildred Loving was an African American woman born on July 22, 1939, in Virginia. She is best known for her role in the landmark Supreme Court case, Loving v. Virginia, which challenged laws prohibiting interracial marriage. Mildred married Richard Loving, a white man, in 1958, and their union led to their arrest due to Virginia's anti-miscegenation laws.
The case reached the Supreme Court in 1967, where the justices ruled that state bans on interracial marriage were unconstitutional. This decision was a significant victory for the Civil Rights Movement and helped pave the way for greater equality in marriage laws across the United States.
