Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge
Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge is located in the central Pacific Ocean and is part of the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument. It covers approximately 590 square miles and is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including several species of seabirds, such as the Laysan albatross and black-footed albatross. The refuge plays a crucial role in the conservation of these species and their habitats.
Established in 1988, the refuge is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It serves as a critical nesting site for millions of birds and provides a sanctuary for marine life. The area is also significant for its historical context, having been a site of military activity during World War II.
