Microtubule Organizing Center
A Microtubule Organizing Center (MTOC) is a cellular structure that plays a crucial role in organizing microtubules, which are part of the cytoskeleton. MTOCs help in the formation and anchoring of microtubules, facilitating their growth and stability. The most well-known MTOC is the centrosome, which is found in animal cells and consists of a pair of centrioles surrounded by pericentriolar material.
MTOCs are essential for various cellular processes, including cell division, where they help in the formation of the mitotic spindle. This spindle is responsible for separating chromosomes during mitosis and meiosis. By organizing microtubules, MTOCs ensure proper cell shape, transport, and signaling within the cell.
