Microbeads
Microbeads are tiny plastic particles, usually less than 5 millimeters in size, commonly found in personal care products like exfoliating scrubs, toothpaste, and shower gels. They are used for their abrasive qualities and to enhance the texture of these products. However, when washed down the drain, microbeads can pass through water treatment systems and enter oceans and rivers, contributing to pollution.
These small plastics pose a threat to marine life, as they can be ingested by fish and other aquatic organisms. Once consumed, microbeads can accumulate in the food chain, potentially affecting human health. In response to these concerns, some countries have implemented bans on the use of microbeads in cosmetics and personal care items.
