Michael Madhusudan Dutta
Michael Madhusudan Dutta was a prominent Bengali poet and playwright, born on January 25, 1824, in the village of Sagardari, Bengal. He is best known for his contributions to Bengali literature, particularly for introducing the sonnet form to the language. Dutta's works often explored themes of love, loss, and social issues, making him a significant figure in the Bengali Renaissance.
Dutta's most famous work is the epic poem Meghnad Badh Kavya, which narrates the story of Ravana's son, Meghnad, from the Ramayana. His innovative use of language and style helped shape modern Bengali poetry, and he is celebrated as one of the pioneers of the genre. Dutta passed away on June 28, 1873, leaving a lasting legacy in Indian literature.
