Merode Altarpiece
The Merode Altarpiece is a triptych painting created by the early Netherlandish artist Robert Campin around 1425-1430. It is housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The altarpiece features three panels: the central panel depicts the Annunciation, where the Virgin Mary receives the news of her pregnancy from the Angel Gabriel. The side panels show the donors, who commissioned the work, and a scene of Joseph in his workshop.
This artwork is notable for its detailed realism and use of symbolism. The setting is a domestic interior, reflecting the importance of everyday life in Flemish culture. The use of light, color, and intricate details in objects, such as the lilies symbolizing purity, enhances the spiritual message of the piece.
