Menaechmus of Syracuse
Menaechmus of Syracuse was a Greek mathematician who lived during the 4th century BCE. He is best known for his work in geometry and for being one of the earliest mathematicians to study conic sections. Menaechmus is often credited with discovering the properties of parabolas, ellipses, and hyperbolas, which later influenced the work of other mathematicians.
Menaechmus was a student of Plato and contributed to the field of mathematics through his exploration of geometric problems. His most famous problem involved the duplication of the cube, which sought to find the side length of a cube with double the volume of a given cube.
