Melanocyte
A melanocyte is a specialized skin cell responsible for producing a pigment called melanin. Melanin is what gives color to our skin, hair, and eyes. These cells are primarily found in the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin, and play a crucial role in protecting the skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.
In addition to their role in pigmentation, melanocytes are involved in various skin conditions. For example, an overproduction of melanin can lead to hyperpigmentation, while a decrease can result in vitiligo. Understanding melanocytes is essential for studying skin health and conditions related to pigmentation.
