Megapodidae
Megapodidae, commonly known as megapodes, are a family of birds found primarily in Australia, New Guinea, and surrounding islands. They are unique for their nesting behavior, as they build large mounds of decaying vegetation to incubate their eggs using heat generated from decomposition. This method allows them to avoid the need for parental care after the eggs hatch.
Megapodes are characterized by their strong legs and large feet, which help them dig and manipulate materials for their nests. They are generally ground-dwelling birds and are known for their distinctive calls and plumage. Some species, like the Malleefowl, are particularly well-studied for their fascinating reproductive strategies.
