Megakaryocyte
A megakaryocyte is a large bone marrow cell responsible for the production of platelets, which are essential for blood clotting. These cells are characterized by their large size and multi-lobed nucleus. Megakaryocytes develop from hematopoietic stem cells and undergo a process called endomitosis, where they replicate their DNA without cell division, resulting in their unique structure.
Once mature, megakaryocytes extend long projections called proplatelets into the bloodstream. These proplatelets fragment into smaller pieces, forming platelets that circulate in the blood. Proper functioning of megakaryocytes is crucial for maintaining hemostasis and preventing excessive bleeding, linking them to conditions like thrombocytopenia and thrombosis.
