Meech Lake Accord
The Meech Lake Accord was a constitutional agreement proposed in Canada in 1987. It aimed to persuade the province of Quebec to sign the Constitution Act of 1982 by recognizing Quebec as a "distinct society" and granting it greater autonomy. The Accord included provisions for increased powers in areas like immigration and language.
Despite initial support, the Accord faced opposition from various groups, including Indigenous peoples and some provinces. It ultimately failed to be ratified by the required number of provinces by the 1990 deadline, leading to significant political repercussions and ongoing discussions about Canadian federalism and provincial rights.
