Medium-Chain Triglycerides
Medium-Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) are a type of fat found in certain foods, such as coconut oil and palm kernel oil. They consist of fatty acids with a chain length of 6 to 12 carbon atoms. MCTs are easily digested and quickly absorbed by the body, providing a rapid source of energy.
Due to their unique structure, MCTs are metabolized differently than long-chain triglycerides (LCTs). They are transported directly to the liver, where they can be converted into ketones, an alternative energy source for the brain and body. This property makes MCTs popular among those following a ketogenic diet.
