Medieval Heraldry
Medieval heraldry is the system of symbols and designs used to identify individuals, families, and organizations during the Middle Ages. It originated in the 12th century, primarily for knights and nobles, to distinguish themselves in battle and tournaments. Each coat of arms featured unique colors, patterns, and symbols, known as charges, representing the bearer's lineage, achievements, or values.
Heraldry also played a significant role in social status and governance. Heralds, officials responsible for managing heraldic symbols, ensured that coats of arms were unique and properly recorded. This system laid the groundwork for modern identification methods, influencing everything from flags to logos.
