Meckel's diverticulum
Meckel's diverticulum is a small pouch that forms in the wall of the small intestine, usually located about two feet from the junction with the large intestine. It is a remnant of a structure called the vitelline duct, which connects the developing embryo to the yolk sac. This condition is present at birth and occurs in about 2% of the population.
Most people with Meckel's diverticulum do not experience symptoms. However, in some cases, it can lead to complications such as bleeding, infection, or intestinal obstruction. Diagnosis often involves imaging studies or endoscopy, and treatment may require surgical removal if complications arise.
