May Revolution Assembly
The May Revolution Assembly refers to a series of events that took place in May 1810 in Buenos Aires, which was then part of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata. This assembly marked the beginning of the Argentine War of Independence from Spanish colonial rule. The local population sought to establish a government that represented their interests, leading to the formation of the first local government, known as the First Junta.
The assembly was a response to the political instability in Spain due to the Peninsular War and the capture of the Spanish king, Ferdinand VII. The May Revolution Assembly laid the groundwork for the eventual declaration of independence in 1816 and is celebrated in Argentina as a significant milestone in its history.
