May Revolution
The May Revolution was a series of events that took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from May 18 to May 25, 1810. It marked the beginning of the Argentine War of Independence against Spanish colonial rule. The revolution was driven by local criollo leaders and resulted in the establishment of a local government, known as the First Junta, which aimed to govern in the name of the deposed Spanish king, Ferdinand VII.
The May Revolution was significant as it inspired other regions in South America to seek independence. It laid the groundwork for the eventual declaration of independence from Spain in 1816. The events of this week are celebrated annually in Argentina as May Revolution Day.
