The Mars Helicopter, named Ingenuity, is a small robotic aircraft designed to explore the surface of Mars. It was developed by NASA as part of the Mars 2020 mission, which also includes the Perseverance rover. Ingenuity's primary goal is to demonstrate powered flight in the thin Martian atmosphere, which is about 1% the density of Earth's. Ingenuity made its first successful flight on April 19, 2021, becoming the first aircraft to achieve powered flight on another planet. Since then, it has completed multiple flights, providing valuable aerial data and images that help scientists better understand the Martian landscape and assist the Perseverance rover in its exploration tasks.
