Maria Sibylla Merian
Maria Sibylla Merian was a German naturalist and scientific illustrator born in 1647. She is best known for her detailed observations of insects and plants, which she documented in her groundbreaking work, Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium. This book, published in 1705, showcased her studies of the life cycles of various species, particularly in Suriname.
Merian's contributions to entomology and botany were significant, as she was one of the first to document the transformation of caterpillars into butterflies. Her artistic skills combined with her scientific observations helped lay the foundation for modern entomology and inspired future generations of naturalists.
