Maria Mitchell was an American astronomer born on August 1, 1818, in Nantucket, Massachusetts. She is best known for discovering a comet in 1847, which was later named Miss Mitchell's Comet. This achievement made her the first woman to be recognized for discovering a comet, earning her international fame and respect in the scientific community.
In addition to her work in astronomy, Mitchell was a strong advocate for women's education and professional opportunities. She became the first female professor of astronomy at Vassar College in 1865, where she inspired many young women to pursue careers in science and mathematics.
