Malolos Constitution
The Malolos Constitution was the first republican constitution in Asia, ratified on January 20, 1899. It established the framework for the First Philippine Republic, which aimed to create a democratic government after the country declared independence from Spanish rule. The constitution emphasized civil liberties, separation of powers, and the sovereignty of the people.
Drafted by the Malolos Congress, the constitution was a significant step in the Philippines' quest for self-governance. However, it was short-lived due to the outbreak of the Philippine-American War, which led to the dissolution of the republic and the eventual establishment of American colonial rule.
