Makah people
The Makah people are an Indigenous group located in the northwestern United States, primarily on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. They have a rich cultural heritage that includes traditional practices such as whaling, fishing, and crafting. The Makah language, part of the Salishan language family, is an important aspect of their identity.
Historically, the Makah relied on the abundant resources of the Pacific Ocean for sustenance. In 1999, they resumed whaling after a long hiatus, emphasizing sustainable practices. The Makah continue to celebrate their traditions through festivals, art, and community events, preserving their unique cultural identity for future generations.
