Homonym: MDS (Syndrome)
MDS, or Myelodysplastic Syndromes, is a group of disorders caused by poorly formed or dysfunctional blood cells. It occurs when the bone marrow, which produces blood cells, does not function properly, leading to a decrease in the number of healthy red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. This can result in symptoms like fatigue, increased risk of infections, and easy bruising or bleeding.
MDS is often considered a type of blood cancer and can progress to acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in some cases. Diagnosis typically involves blood tests and a bone marrow biopsy. Treatment options may include supportive care, medications, or stem cell transplants, depending on the severity of the condition.
